Bid to stop Luttig Street building demolition denied
The building was determined to be unsafe for human occupation.

The Tshwane metro recently announced its intention to proceed with demolishing the illegally erected buildings on Luttig Street in Pretoria West after an appeal lodged by the owner was denied.
The metro obtained a court order to demolish illegally constructed buildings on Stand 1313 and Stand 1312 located at 510 and 514 Luttig Street, Pretoria West last month.
The Pretoria High Court has since received an appeal from George Asaba and GABSA Consolidated Prop (Pty) Ltd to stop the order from being carried out.
MMC for Corporate and Shared Services as well as the chairperson of the Metro’s Bad Buildings Committee, Kholofelo Morodi confirmed the appeal was struck off the roll in the High Court on April 3.
“As Chairperson of the Bad Buildings Committee, I note the George Asaba matter has been struck off the roll, with costs to him.
We remain committed to upholding lawful development after securing the demolition order for illegal Pretoria West buildings. The city is going ahead with the demolition,” Morodi said.
The structures built violated the National Building Regulations and Building Standards.
The metro initiated legal proceedings after it was established that the buildings were constructed without approved building plans, posing a significant risk to public safety and contravening municipal by-laws.
Community Safety MMC, Hannes Coetzee expressed his relief with the court’s decision saying that the four-storey building is a safety risk and liable to collapse should tenants occupy it.
“As MMC for Community Safety, we inspected the four-storey illegal building in Pretoria West and it was not complying with any national building regulations.
A contravention notice was issued and they still did not comply. Pretoria High Court approved a demolishing order, and Mr Asaba’s appeal was turned down with costs,” Coetzee said.
The Bad Buildings Committee in the metro is tasked with identifying and revitalising derelict buildings within the inner city. The mayoral sub-committee was created by Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya at the beginning of the year.
